Disposable or rechargeable: what's the difference?
- Disposable vapes come filled and charged (or with a small charging port). When the liquid runs out, the whole device is thrown away. They cost the most over time because you keep buying the battery and the electronics, not just the liquid.
- Rechargeable vapes with prefilled pods (like JUUL or Vuse) use a battery you keep and charge, plus sealed pods you replace when they run out.
- Refillable vapes use a battery you keep, plus a pod or tank you fill with bottled e-liquid. The coil inside, or the whole empty pod, wears out and needs replacing every week or few.
For prefilled pods, enter the pods under "Refills" and leave coils at 0. For refillable vapes, enter the e-liquid under "Refills" and add your coils or empty pods.
How this calculator works
Your results are estimates based on these assumptions:
- Same habit every year. You keep buying the same amount for all the years you enter.
- Prices rise 2% a year, the Federal Reserve's long-run inflation goal. Vape prices have recently risen faster because of taxes and tariffs, so this is likely low.
- Investments return 7% a year, roughly the stock market's long-run average after inflation. Real returns vary a lot from year to year, so treat it as an illustration, not a forecast.
- A Chipotle chicken bowl costs $10.75 today and rises with the same inflation.
- Hours of work use median U.S. full-time pay before taxes ($31.28 an hour), rising with inflation.
- Health costs aren't included, such as medical and insurance bills, so your true cost is higher.
